Ever since Spotify was launched overseas in late 2008, there has been an unbridled enthusiasm in our office for this all-in-one streaming/offline music consumption service to come to the United States.
Alas, July 14th, 2011 was the glorious day which brought Spotify stateside, and now Spotify can be found streaming more often than not in these here parts (aka our office, homes and anywhere our mobile devices can be found).
Prophecy: Big changes in the way we ourselves and the world around us will be listening to music are about to take place in the extremely near future, ahem, today.
The Bandwagon
Three words: Jump On It. That’s our opinion at least, but if you are a musician who is serious about going to where the people are, we recommend checking out how to submit your music to Spotify.
If you are a musician who already has your music syndicated to one of Spotify’s current aggregators, no need to worry … you’re most likely already there!
What’s So Great About Spotify?
In no particular order, our top 5 reasons for using Spotify in 2011.
- It’s FREE (and/or inexpensive)
- We can listen to new releases in their entirety on their release date
- We can create an infinite amount of easily-shareable playlists
- It’s a feel-good alternative to iTunes
- It’s like a cloud-based BitTorrent for music … but legal
Is That It?
If those don’t do it for you we might just have to plug the Unlimited ($4.99/mo) and Premium ($9.99/mo) plans for a second here, as there are some pretty impressive features to be found within, like the ability to:
- Listen to Spotify on any mobile device
- Remove in-stream and in-client advertising
- Access up to 3,000 songs of your choice in ‘offline’ mode
- Invite your friends to become Spotify members
- Upgrade to 320kbps streaming quality
Sounds Pretty Interesting, Right?
You might be starting to now see why we have been so excited about Spotify during the years leading up to its US launch, and since this is our opinion — not an endorsement — we think Spotify is the greatest thing to happen to music discovery and everyday musical consumption since Apple’s release (and extensive marketing) of the iPod and iTunes store. Congratulations Spotify, you have made our electric sheep-filled dreams a waking reality.
