SES San Francisco 2011: Quotables Pt. 4

Search Engine Strategies: What you need to know about search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO) and the tactics and best practices of implementing each in your business’ online strategy.  We here at AudioAcrobat believe in furthering our knowledge in these areas and sharing as much as we can with our readers on this here WordPress weblog.

During our attendance at the 2011 SES San Francisco event, we made a point of live-tweeting notable quotes and facts from our favorite sessions and are proud to present our readers with a selection of our favorites.  Topics covered include Information Architecture, SEO Tools, User Generated SEO, WordPress, HTML5 and Mobile Marketing.

In today’s posting, we’ll cover the fourth installment of SES San Francisco 2011 quotables, highlighting our favorite nuggets of information taken away from the event.  Did you catch Pt. 1 and Pt. 2?  How about Pt. 3?  Here’s Pt. 4!

HTML5: A Cowpath on a Cliff

During his presentation, Karl Dubost (Opera) shared many nuggets of truth which were taken away from SES SF and remembered as some of our absolute favorites from the experience as a whole.  He spoke English as a second language, held a keen sense of humor and kept us (literally) on the edge of our seats throughout the entire session.  Here are a couple of our favorite takeaways:

"You have to learn from your users." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

Simply stated and often unappreciated by developers (no offense intended), the above quote reminds us of the days spent beta testing, submitting bug fixes, alternatives and feature requests.

Essentially, if you neglect the opinions of those who will actually be using your site/service, you can kiss your paycheck goodbye.

"The browser developers are behind, google is behind." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

Fact: HTML5 is not yet standardized.  The year 2014 is supposedly when this will take place.  Until then…

"Whatever people tell you about HTML5 is bulls—." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

As you read the above quote, you may be asking yourself if this guy really knows what he’s talking about.  It’s a bit of a cache 22, but there’s a great deal of truth to the fact that public HTML5 knowledge is vague.  Don’t worry, it will get better.

"20% of the people in Western countries have accessibility issues, and they buy stuff online." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

This is an interesting one.  Making sure that your site/service accommodates those with accessibility issues is more important that you may think.  It all comes back to remembering that your users determine your site’s success — even if they’re impaired in some way, shape or form.

"Your address book is the main social network of your life." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

The above quote is another one that caught us off guard.  It is so simple, yet so often forgotten.  If you need to migrate between social networks, how do you make sure to bring your friends (contacts) with you?  Your address book, of course!

"In 2014 mobile devices will outweigh PCs." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

Did we ever think that this would be a reality?  Not until recently, but evidence is fully supporting the above statement.  Where does it leave developers?  Scrambling to ensure that their sites display well on (all) mobile devices.  Not an easy task, but well worth it in the grand scheme of things.

"If your site doesn't work on a mobile device, you're doing it wrong." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

Further support of the previous quote.  Start with mobile, end with satisfaction.

"Do not design for a device. Do not design for a specific platform. Design for the web." #sessf #html5 #quote

— AudioAcrobat® (@AudioAcrobat) August 17, 2011

Sage-like advice.  Hands down.  This will ensure longevity of your code.

Those are our favorites from HTML5: A Cowpath on a Cliff … Do you have a favorite quote from above or found within Pt. 1, Pt. 2 or Pt. 3?  Perhaps you’d like to share?  Please leave a comment below for other readers to see.  We’ll be prepping our final installment!

And now for a bit of shameless self-promotion…
