With over 54 million active worldwide Mac users already using Mac OS to the test, it is no big surprise to discover Steve Jobs‘ unveiling of Mac OS X Lion in the coming weeks. In fact, we’ve been anticipating the conjunction of features previously seen only within the mobile iOS software into the desktop/laptop-based Mac OS X line since iOS 4 (April 2010).
In today’s posting we will take our readers through the fifth round of our favorite new features found within Mac OS X Lion, which will be available for purchase/upgrade this July.
iChat
Oh buddy! Yahoo! users will like this one… In Mac OS X Lion, users will now be able to easily import Yahoo! buddy lists and seamlessly integrate any IM buddy list without duplicates. Want to tell all of your buddy lists that your away/available at the same time? Done! There’s also now search, plug-ins, faces and movable tabs!
Internet Restore and Utilities
The biggest feature here is a built-in partition that allows users to easily re-install or repair OS X Lion, should the need arise … WITHOUT DISCS! Users can also browse the web using Safari in recovery mode as well as restore using Time Machine.
Networking
For all you Mac OS network lovers, OS X Lion has got some new tricks up it’s sleeve, including NFSv4 support, SMB with DFS, a captive network and now a low-power wake mode, allowing the computer to wake up for file-sharing, backup and more … without turning on the monitor or attached USB devices!
Photo Booth
Continuing the full-screen trend of OS X Lion, Photo Booth now will actually make you feel like you’re in a real-life photo booth, especially for you 27″ iMac users! There’s also nine new effects, face tracking, gesture navigation and a new ‘Trim’ feature for video clips!
Preview
What can we say, we saw this one coming a mile away… Preview will now be able to go full-screen baby! There’s smart magnification, at-a-glance search results, cool signature recognition with FaceTime, autosave and even slight color adjustment tools in the new ‘Preview’ for Mac OS X Lion. Heck, you can even open anything from the iWork suite and most Microsoft Office documents!
In Conclusion…
The above features, coupled with those found in Pt. I, Pt. II, Pt. III, Pt. IV and the upcoming Pt. VI of our OS X Lion preview are merely the tip of an iceberg comprised of 250+ new features found within what may very well be the best operating system ever created!
