The series highlights tips, tricks and techniques to aid the modern-day musician in crafting their sound, building a bigger fan base, increasing fan interaction and converting fans to sales.
Everybody likes free music. Even the president has probably downloaded some free MP3s for his iPod… This is what people are searching for, what musicians use to attract new listeners and how the music industry keeps longtime fans waiting for a pin drop.
In today’s posting, we’ll take our musically-inclined readers through the process of setting up their own podcast through AudioAcrobat, submitting it to iTunes and offering their listeners a free song each and every month (of which they either own the copyright to or have express permission from the copyright holder to do so).
Free Music? What’s in it for me?
A lot of musicians are leery of giving away the product of their labor without receiving anything in return. We completely understand and are not suggesting conducting this labor of love without expecting to increase listenership, page views, booking opportunities and most of all, physical and digital album sales.
What we do recommend considering, is offering listeners a taste of what they might not have otherwise heard, especially if they are loyal fans who attend your concerts and purchase your music and merchandise. Sometimes, even the most loyal patrons will be on the lookout for a freebie!
This can come by way of offering one or more songs from already published albums, unreleased home/live/studio recordings, rare b-sides, remixes, forgotten favorites, interviews, commercial spots and just about anything that will get your audience hyped up to click the ‘download’ button.
The end result? Listener engagement. Giving the listener reason to stay tuned for what’s next to come. Album release dates don’t grow on trees and sometimes years can pass between entries in an artist’s discography. Maintaining a free song of the month podcast is one easy way to keep listeners coming back, month after month, without negating sales.
